Simple Steps in Making Your Own Cushion Slipcover |
A cushion slipcover can be used to make your furniture last longer. However, there are certain instances wherein it can be very difficult to find slipcovers that will fit your cushion instantly because of its varying sizes. A perfect solution to this is to make your own slipcover for your cushion. Before starting on this project, you must first make a list of all the things that you will need such as muslin, cording, dressmaker pins, measuring tapes, dressmaker shears (or any shears will do, just as long as they are sharp), home decorator fabrics, fabric pens, threads, sewing machine, ordinary needles, sewing machine needles, rulers, paper, and pencils. Once you have gathered the materials, you can follow these instructions in making your own cushion slipcover. First things first, you have to measure your cushion. Remember to take note of the sizes of all the sides. If you want your slipcover to fit well, getting the accurate dimensions is a must. You must get the length of the sides, back, top, and bottom. After getting the exact numbers, add a couple of inches because this will serve as your seam. Second step is to make a pattern which you will follow with the use of the muslin. Again, add a couple of inches for the seam. Cut your pattern that corresponds to the measurement based on the size of your cushion. Pin your pattern into the cushion. Make sure that the right pieces will go to their proper place. Take your time in doing this because this is one of the most important steps in making a slipcover. If necessary, you can trim the pieces so that it will follow the outline. After you have placed the pattern, you can use the sewing machine to sew the pieces of fabrics together. Use the right thread color so that it will not show through the cloth. Take note of the seams; make sure that they are properly sewn in place. Once you have finished the sewing the seams, try to fit the slipcover over your cushion. This will help you determine if there is something that still needs to be fixed. If you feel that everything is properly in place, you can remove the cushion slipcover again and this time, sew the seams permanently. After that, you can sew the cording or other details that you want. If you know how to stitch embroidery, you can try adding your initials for a personalized look. |
