How to start doing your own slipcovers?
- First things first, you have to measure your sofa. get the specific size, and include every part – from the lowest to the highest point, plus the height, width, and even the thickness of the fabric.
- After getting the sizes, determine how many yards of fabric you need by multiplying the height by two, and the width by four. Remember this is just a guide, you might want to consult a seamstress or a friend who sews for you to correctly assess the length of fabric that you will need for this project.
- Buy the cloth or fabric that you will use for your slipcovers. You may also opt to have extra yards of fabric just in case you might want to create matching throw pillow cases too.
- Create and draw the pattern in the fabric. After doing this, try to match the pieces together over your sofa, then tuck them using safety pins or needles to hold the pieces of fabric in place. You can also use a tailor’s chalk to mark the edges where you are going to sew.
- Make sure that you have extra allowance in the cloth, so that you can tuck it in the couch. Do the same for the arm rests and head rests.
- Once you are able to measure and create the marks that you need, lay the pieces of fabric on the floor and reverse it. Place the cut out pattern and sew the pieces together using a sewing machine.
- Reverse the finished sofa slipcover and try it on by fitting it over your living room couch.
